ANGKOR THOM TEMPLE

Bayon Temple

Angkor Thom there are 9 km take 20 minutes form Siem Reap town, all of could reach there by Motor-bike,Tuk Tuk or Car. 

Angkor Thom means "the great city" in Khmer.

Angkor Thom was built at the late 12 century by the great king Jayavarman VII (1181-1219),

it is the Buddhist temple in Angkor area.

so it was the Capital city of Khmer Empire a round 900 years ago.

In Angkor area they divide in three period, so from 889-1060 is the first of Angkor period, 

1060-1181 is the second of Angkor period, 1181-1431 is the third of Angkor period, 

that mean Angkor Thom was built in the third of Angkor period.

Angkor Thom is the biggest capital city in Angkor area, 

It was surrounded by a square wall (jayagiri) 8 m high and 12 km in length and further protected by a 120 m-wide moat , 

they said, there were a lot crocodiles in moat during in that time,,, now there aren't any more,.

north to south and east to west there are 5 gates, west gate,

north gate south gate and there are 2 gate in east side,

Each gate, which leads onto a causeway across the moat, 

is flanked with statues of 54 gods on the left and 54 demons on the right.

This is a theme from the Hindu myth of the Churning of the Milk-Ocean (illustrated in the famous bas-relief at Angkor Wat).

After you get in side the Angkor Thom: 

there are many temples to visit,Buddhist temple and Hindu temple,

like Boyon temple which standing in the middle side of Angkor Thom,

Baphuon temple, Phimeanakas Temple,Terrace of the Elephants,Terrace of the Leper King,
